The first Vipassana course in Spain took place in Gamonal (Toledo) in June 1984 at a farmhouse owned by an old student. 12 students took place. Two years later, a second course was held in a village in the province of Guadalajara attended by about 30 students.

Subsequently, from 1995 to 2006 several 10 courses were organized at a rented farm known as Campo Nuevo in Sangarcía near Segovia.

In autumn 2003, several meditators started the search for another centre for rental and to organize courses and they found the seat of the Misioneras del Verbo Divino at Dueñas in Palencia.

In 2004, several three day and weekend courses were held and then the first 10 day course took place in August.

During Easter 2005 and 2006 10 day courses took place at Dueñas, but, seeing as it was not possible to organize courses at Christmas, the centre at Sangarcia was rented for the Christmas courses.

From 2004 to Easter 2012, courses have been organised at the Misioneras del Verbo Divino Centre at Dueñas with a capacity for 70 students and 12 servers.

At Christmas 2007, the centre at Chueca in Toledo was rented for the first time, at a retreat for spiritual exercises with capacity for 98 students and 12 servers From 2007 onwards, courses were organised alternately in both centres six courses per year have been organized in the Central Area, alternating between the rented centres at Dueñas and Chueca, with over 2.000 students taking the courses.

In view of the increased demand for courses in the Central Area and the fact that the only Centre in the Iberian peninsula was Dhamma Neru in Barcelona, is a long way from many provinces, led the Vipassana Foundation to search for a location to site the second centre in Spain.

In June 2011, after a long and intense search, a suitable site was found at Candeleda in the province of Avila, 160 kilometres from Madrid.

A temporary location nearby has been rented at Colonia de Gredos for the organisation of courses until the new centre is completed.

In 2013 seven 10 day courses have been scheduled at Colonia de Gredos at Candeleda. Colonia de Gredos is a summer camp where children learn English and has a capacity for 120 students and 20 servers.

At the present moment in the Central Area group meditation sessions take place in Madrid and Valladolid and 3 day and weekend courses will continue to be organised 4at Dueñas. These courses are an excellent way to practice with other meditators and to strengthen practice.
